This Ugly Yet Beautiful Anime

Filed under: Chapters — Starks at 1:48 pm on Saturday, October 10, 2009

Yes, I just made a Konomini joke. Get over it.

Anyway, episode 2 just aired and I have mixed feelings.

On the one hand, it was a visually stunning episode (well, at least the second half was) as promised. On the other hand, it completely ripped apart the manga…

The episode covered chapters 374-377, 380-382, 400, 404, and 406. For most of those chapters though, the anime simply rewrote and blended them together. Much like how Star Wars fans know that "Han shot first", Inuyasha fans know that "Kagura died first". However, Sunrise ignored this and you're not going to like how. I guarantee you that there will be a shit-storm when Viz puts up the sub in a few hours. (Edit: Wow, it's up already. Nice job Viz!)

One hint though: Souryuuha!

Edit: Next week is Shippou's kitsune youjutsu exam (chapter 506), Shippou's encounter with Mujina and her sword, Dakki (chapter 383), and the introduction of Meidou Zangetsuha (chapter 410). Additionally, according to Patches, chapters 432 and 433 with Kai will be done in episode 4.

Edit 2: For those outside of the US, you can watch the subs on ShonenSunday/hulu using Hotspot Shield (Windows, Mac with Wine, Linux with Wine) or Tor (Windows, Mac, Linux, etc).

Edit 3: If you were wondering how I got the HD images up within minutes of the broadcast, I'd like to cite my source as being the kind people of 2chan (a.k.a. Futaba, not 2ch).

Edit 4: Reminder for those watching the live broadcasts: Episode 3 will air at 1:35 PM EDT (2:35 AM JST).

Anyway, here are some HD pics in no particular order. Click to enlarge them.
(The images should be fixed, plus, I added a cool new effect called HighSlide to the thumbnails.)

I nearly cried when he said Souryuuha. Maybe Rumiko did double cartwheels when she heard it. What were they thinking?

Despite being a non-canon attack, Souryuuha was also used by Tenseiga in movie 3 and would kind of negate the need for Meidou Zangetsuha.

Pardon the double post.
Hakkaku and Ginta cracked me up a little in that scene. Maybe the anime producers decide to inject a little of their magic into the series with a brand new magical attack. Still, it's undeniable that they did try to make a smooth transition into the respective events, taking into consideration that the materials they worked with aren't in sequence. They got rid of the whole Goraishi sequence quickly, and as a matter of fact, it was rather well done. I don't have the exact sentiments for the Sess and Moryoumaru scene though, even before he uttered 'Souryuuha', the fight felt out of place, and Narita Ken sounded odd, somehow!
Am not hating on the Kagura death scene either.

You might want to fix some of the pictures. The ones after Rin and Jaken leads to the pic of the gang everytime you try to click on anything else.

Yes, it was certainly pretty…I expected more from the Kagura scene, but eh. I suppose being a Harry Potter fan has prepared me somewhat for crappy adaptations that feel sloppy and rushed.

Wow…I'm happy they kept Kagura's death the same and I got a chance to laugh at two points during the episode. The first with Koga and crew and second with Rin and Jaken.

Souryuuha!? :-( Why don't we just go ahead and combine the anime and the movies for heaven sake and then we'll really have some sequence problems!!!

Thanks. I've already saw it. I think that I prefer to wait more one day than watching in bad qualtity without subs.
It was just awesome!!. I loved it. I dont care  if this new season  is quick or is not organized. For me is perfect. :D :D This was even better than the first. Oh, Im so anxious for the next ones.

OH MY GOSH. Souryuuha??? Well, it was quite visually appealing…

And Meidou Zangetsuha in the NEXT episode? MY GOD!

I feel like all the scenes with Koga, although put together nicely, just feel randomly injected into episodes that should be primarily about Inuyasha and gang or Sesshy and gang…

So yeah, altogether, I enjoyed the episode (but that might be because I love all things Sesshomaru) I must admit, the Goraishi fight and the Sessh-Mouryomaru fight were very rushed. Rumiko did things in that order for a reason!!

HA to Kagura… YOU'RE DEAD. She was a cool character, I guess. But she irritated me a little. SEE YA.

Very nice death scene though. With the flowers and everything. Very pretty. And Sesshomaru tried to save her! AWWWWW. Even though I already knew that would happen, ITS STILL CUTE. :)

OH OH. In response to the first and second comment about Souryuuha: that attack is not a sword attack like basically all of Inuyasha's attacks (Kaze no Kizu, Bakuryuuha, etc.) It's Sesshomaru's own attack. It's basically a manifestation of his own energy that is released through any of his swords, which is why both Tenseiga and Tokijin can use it, but (in this episode) Tokijin broke b/c it couldn't handle the amount of Sesshomaru's energy going through it. Although it technically does negate the need for Meidou Zangetsuha, Sesshoumaru does not use it very often b/c it probably drains his energy or something like that… That's just my guess and probably what the animators will say in response to Stark's statement. Oh well. We'll just have to wait and see. I will laugh if that attack shows up again in the anime. Just sit there and laugh. :)

Comment by INUYASHA ANIME EXAMINERNo Gravatar

October 11, 2009 @ 8:54 pm

mapThe anime tore apart the pace of the original theme and story.

THE GORASHI SCENE PLAYED PRETY WELL AND PRETTY MUCH THE SAME Original pace

The most horrid example being the meiouju. In the manga, The meioju was demon sealed by a human priest long ago. It was dead and nothing but skull, partial armor, and bones. Moryomaru sent a piece of himself to possess its flesh, and revived it forcing it to fight Inuyasha and his group at a castle. Sesshomaru met Byakuya, and learned of the Dragon Scale Tessaiga's power.

In the anime version the meioju is alive and well, and gets a cameo? and is immediately absorbed?

Koga had met with Inuyasha and his group, after Kaguras death to discuss just what to do about Moryomaru and Naraku. Inuyasha also met Kikyo around that time for the same reason, which occured first in the anime, and in the manga aAFTER Kaguras manga death??

The manga had a correct turning point in this series.

Sango recaped on Kagura possibly saving Kohakus life, bt thats not in the anime. Kohaku also in the manga witnessed Kaguras death yet in the adaptation episode he runs off with Kikyo Immediately??

In the manga story Inuyasha, Kagome, Miroku, Shippo, and  Sango, Kikyo, and Kohaku, Sesshomaru, and Jaken took him on ALL at once and Sesshomaru used a move reminiscent of the dragon strike to fight Moryomaru when he took Kagura's name in vain.

In the manga Kaguras pace was the same as the anime, except she died fist and Moryomaru took her name in vain which result resulted in Sesshomarus reaction given that when a person dies and their name are LATER taken in horrible vain, someone will step up and feel sorry for having witness a futile escape of inevitable death.

In the anime Moryomaru meets Sesshomaru solo in a short first battle that discredits how powerful Tokijin should be able to last. On top of that when fighting Sesshomaru in the manga, Moryomaru had Inuyasha Adamant Barrage tentacles to intimate the older brother with the power of his younger sibling. Kikyo was in shock? Here in the anime Moryomaru uses his flesh? to capture Sesshomaru?

I'm going to give this episode a 7, and for how lucky this show is for somehow still being on the air, this show deserves even less.

PERSONAL COMMENT
Not as rushed as last week tough.

Wow this anime has become so pretty ass the art and i am very upset about the time and pace but i am happy us fans got anything at all has long has they keep those evil things called fillers out i am happy!
P.S Oh and has long has Sesshomaru keeps his normal pace in the story ie not showing up to much but not to less ether lol
P.P.S and wow the whole romance with Kagura and Sesshomaru was so beautiful that sence was so much more powerful then the manga (For me at least) ^_^

Wow, so far I am loving this anime! I feel sad though that Kagura is dead, she was my favorite villain in the series. It feels weird to have her out of the picture so suddenly. The little scene between Sesshomaru and Kagura was SO touching. He wanted to save her!!! Stupid Naraku, can't wait to watch him die in the anime! Wow, I sound evil. Lol, oh well.

I felt the fight between Koga and the guardian was too short. That should have been drawn out in two episodes in my opinion, but oh well. Perhaps the creators have a logical reasoning for rushing things. I know the anger towards Sunrise is justified, but it's also wasted. They'll do things however they want to, sorry guys.

Anyway, I didn't feel all that satisfied with the Kikyo and Inuyasha moment. Then again, the anime creators always made Kikyo seem nothing short than an evil witch. In the manga after Inuyasha hugs her, she just walks away peacefully, in the anime she holds a dagger to his throat. Geeze, c'mon people, Kikyo's a nice gal, sometimes. I'm starting to worry about Kikyo's death scene when it comes up. I may be an Inu/Kag supporter, but a part of me has a tender spot for the Inu/Kik shipping. I hope the anime keeps it exactly the same as the manga and even give us that sweet goodbye kiss.

The artwork was breath-taking. The first series dulls in comparison to this. If they make the rest of our twenty-six episodes looking this amazing, I really don't mind the rushing. It's got such a pull to it and I'm happy they're not making the characters look all chubby in the face or seeming even childish. Episode twenty-three of the first series looked like hell.

I can't wait for episode three of Inuyasha The Final Act! Finally, a break from all the fighting and we get to see the humor that pulled me in to Inuyasha in the first place. I've always adored the little squabbles between Inuyasha and Shippo, when in reality the two do have a sort of Father/Son bond. Or maybe brother bond. Either way, it will be a nice thing to see the humor in Inuyasha once again!

PS: Lol, the name of the eighth episode is "As the stars twinkle"? lol. Could the creators have been even more cliche? I can just imagine Inuyasha's english voice announcing that all dramatically. I will be rolling on the floor laughing. That's gotta be a mistake on the translator's part. It should be Kikyo's Light or something like that.

A slightly less rushed ep this time. Just love the way they wrote out everyone else outta the fight scene with Mouryoumaru. I was looking forward to this being fully animated.  **sighs**  Can't have everything, I guess.  I wonder if  the others were taking a mandatory coffee break to save on costs or something?  Souryuuha ha ha ha ha ha.  Joke's on us.  I would've liked to have seen Sessh "squished like a ripe persimmon" instead of the manga.
It was sad to see Kagura die again. I teared up again.  Sessh looked like he teared up for a moment there.  That was a nice touch on the part of the animators.

If that episode's where Kikyou dies – which it most probably is – I'll say they're making her death rather snappy. Your fireworks thing cracked me up !

Comment by InuKagFanNo Gravatar

@Fey
I believe for certain that the episode is where Kikyo dies. And I agree, they'll probably accomplish this quickly and without much effort, which is a real shame since the battles leading up to her death were pretty epic. I would think Kagome going up to Mount Azusa for the bow would take up at least three episodes, but they think they can accomplish it in one? Then again, the anime creators think of Kikyo as a bad person and shouldn't get too much of the limelight. And will Koga even be there like he was in the manga? Probably not… He'll most likely get taken off the script before his time in the manga. Again, a real shame. I love Inuyasha and the new series, but there are a lot of things in the anime I wished they kept the same as the manga. I'm still hoping for that kiss between Kikyo and Inuyasha, and who knows, we may see those fireworks, lol. Seriously… 'as the stars twinkle' I'm never gonna stop ridiculing that.

I thought the episode was a little fast paced, and a lot of things happened very quickly, or at least more quickly than I would have liked.  Altogether I liked it, but my biggest issue with the episode is this: in the manga, as soon as Kagura passes, there's a giant gust of wind that rises up as if Kagura was saying goodbye, and that was a really powerful sequence for me.  Why did they not have that dramatic point in the anime?

Comment by FeyNo Gravatar

October 14, 2009 @ 3:20 am

>InuKagFan
They prolly didn't animate the whole Goraishi sequence just to use it in the Kai arc, so Kouga should still stick around till Kikyou kicks the bucket; although I'm worried about how the battle before that would turn out since it culminates into/results in her death (one of the most crucial deaths) . Hopefully it isn't too shabby, if snappy.
& There's an article regarding Inuyasha in a local paper and it seems that Michihiko Suwa said that they 'did not change the content of  Inuyasha so that viewers around the world would be able to enjoy its unque story'. Turns out things aren't quite going the way he promised.
